Athletes gearing up for GHSA sectional track competition

Athletes wanting to compete in the GHSA track and field championships will have their chance to qualify Saturday.
Sectional meets will take place throughout the state, with two meets in each classification except for Class 1A, where there is one sectional for Class 1A-Public and one sectional for Class 1A-Private.
Several athletes from the Albany area are top seeds in the Class 3A sectional at Bremen, based on region meet finishes.
Dougherty’s Caleb Vance is the top entry in the boys discus competition, posting a 136-foot, 10-inch throw in region competition. Worth County’s Chavis Marshall is the top seed in the boys triple jump, having won the Region 1-3A title with a 46-7.25 jump.
Monroe’s girls have the top two seeds in the 4×100 relay, with the A relay qualifying in 48.14 seconds and the B relay posting a 49.62 time. The Hurricanes also have the top two seeds in the girls 100, with Jaeda Hunt the No. 1 seed in 11.87 seconds and Mikendy Edwards the No. 2 seed in 12.34 seconds, as well as the 200 (Hunt in 24.69, Edwards in 25.51).
The Hurricanes also have the top two seeds in the girls 300-meter hurdles, with J’Milya Poole in the top spot (44.53) and Isis Mcvay in second (44.54).
Additional No. 1 seeds from Monroe include Hunt in the long jump (18-6.5), Mcvay in the triple jump (38-3.5) and 100 hurdles (15.47), Poole in the 400 (56.99) and the 4×400 relay (3:52.96).
In the Class 4A sectional at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus, Westover’s girls have the top seed in three events.
The Patriots’ Shamia Jones is the top seed in the girls 800 in 2:23.24. Her teammate, Chastity Pickett, is the No. 1 seed in the 300 hurdles (44.96), while the Westover girls 4×400 relay (3:59.42) is the top seed in that event.
Class 1A-Public schools will compete at Tift County. Terrell County’s Tanisha Huckaby is the No. 1 seed in the girls 100-meter hurdles (15.74) and 300-meter hurdles (47.49).
In Class 6A, Lee County is competing in the sectional at Grovetown.
