AMERICUS — Gov. Nathan Deal announced on Tuesday the appointment of the Lewis R. Lamb as district attorney of the Southwestern Judicial Circuit.

Lamb, who previously served as the chief assistant district attorney for the judicial circuit, will fill the vacancy created by the passing of the Plez Hardin. The appointment will take effect upon swearing in.

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Hardin, 48, was found deceased on the afternoon of April 9 in a vehicle at an unoccupied residence in Leslie. Hardin died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Shortly afterward, Lamb, the acting district attorney, released a statement saying he had learned that Hardin — not the district attorney’s office — was the subject of a federal investigation related to financial and tax improprieties.

Lamb said he asked all six counties in the circuit to conduct a financial audit. In the process of investigating the matter, he said missing funds were revealed.

Lamb has served as the chief assistant district attorney with the Southwestern Judicial Circuit since January 2009. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of West Georgia and a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. He has four children and resides in Leesburg.
