MOULTRIE — Sonny and Jeannie Brown of Colquitt County were honored as Foster Caregivers of the Year by the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services at the recent third annual Foster Caregiver Appreciation Luncheon at the Hilton Atlanta hotel. Radio personality Willie Moore Jr., who was adopted as a child, was the master of ceremonies.
The nominees at the luncheon were chosen by case managers who make monthly visits and regularly interview children in the families’ care.
“We’re proud of all of our foster parents because of the very vital role they play in caring for the state’s 15,000 children in foster care,” Virginia Pryor, director of the state’s child welfare agency, said. “These honored today, though, are very special because of the way they go above and beyond what we ask of caregivers.”
The Browns currently have one child in their home they have cared for for a little over a year. They have requested to have the child’s younger siblings placed in their home as well to keep the children together. The Browns encourage their friends and family members to consider fostering and adopting children in Colquitt County to prevent siblings from being separated or taken far away.
Sonny and Jeannie Brown are active in the Adoptive and Foster Parent Association and have been supportive of children in their community for years. They have also shown their support for the agency and the children in their community. The Browns have co-parented with biological parents of children placed in their home and say they believe in continuing contact between the children and their families.
The luncheon and awards are a part of National Foster Care Month, an event to highlight the work of foster caregivers and to encourage others to step forward to either support foster parents or to become foster parents.
