SPORTS BRIEFS: Mitchell County grad qualifies for NCAA track finals
Hole-in-one recorded at Flint River

McKinely West, a 2015 Mitchell County graduate, qualified in three events for Friday’s NCAA men’s track and field championship finals in Eugene, Oregon.
West, a junior at Southern Miss, was involved in a nailbiter of a heat in the 100-meter dash, with the top three finishers in the heat crossing the line two-thousandths of a second apart. West placed second at 10.094 seconds, good for a spot in the final.
In the 200, West also claimed second in a close race, claiming a spot in Friday’s final by seven-thousandths of a second. His time was 20.531 seconds.
West and his Southern Miss teammates also wrapped up a spot in the 4×100 final, finishing second in the team’s heat at 38.91 seconds.
Hole-in-one recorded
Ray Fuentes recorded a hole-in-one on the 11th hole at Flint River Municipal Golf Course.
Fuentes used a pitching wedge from 108 yards. Dan Miller was the witness.
