ASU picks up four transfers
Albany State University
From staff reports
Albany State University Football inked four junior college transfers during the NCAA Early Signing Period on Dec. 19, head coach Gabe Giardina announced.
Cornerback Tomas Ward signed from ASA Miami, while offensive tackle Elshondric Buchanan comes from Southwest Mississippi Community College. Georgia Military College sends two to Albany State: center Kendall Henderson and bandit Jordan Williams.
“We are really excited about not only the talent, but also the character of the young men we have signed mid-year. We feel like they are going to add a lot to our team on the field and to our family in the locker room,” said Giardina.
Ward, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back, brings physicality, intelligence and great man coverage skills to the Dirty Blue defense. The Deland, Florida native was tied for third in the nation for JUCO corners in 2018 with five interceptions for the ASA Miami Silverstorm. Ward also recorded seven touchdowns and had 10 interceptions during his high school career at DeLand High School.
Standing at 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, Buchanan is a long, rangy, athletic tackle that fits perfectly into the Gold Rush’s spread option scheme. The Jackson, Mississippi native won a state champion in shot put for Lanier High School before joining the Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Williams also comes to Albany from Georgia Military, where he recorded six sacks, a forced fumble and interception. A native of Lithonia, Georgia, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound bandit played his high school career on the West Coast at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon. His playmaking, along with a great frame, great get off, great hands and great hips, led to his offer from ASU according to the Rams’ coaching staff.
Henderson also hails from Georgia Military, where the 6-foot-2, 290-pound, hard-nosed center completed his associates degree. Henderson, who prepped at Wayne County High School, is expected to bring a mix of strength and athleticism as the centerpiece of the Gold Rush offensive front.
Albany State University’s signing day success comes on the heels of a 7-4 season, which saw the Golden Rams claim the SIAC East Championship.
