Georgia Tech linebacker Kyle Efford medically retires from football

ATLANTA — Kyle Efford played football as if every snap might be his last.
On Tuesday, the Georgia Tech linebacker announced there would be no more.
Efford, one of the Yellow Jackets’ most productive and respected defenders, has medically retired because of injuries accumulated during his five-year career. He will remain with the program through the 2026 season as a captain and player-coach.
“This isn’t how I imagined my football career coming to an end, but I am at peace,” Efford said. “I can say with complete confidence that I gave this game every single piece of me. There is nothing left in the tank, and there are no regrets in my heart.”
Efford leaves with 250 career tackles and a place in Georgia Tech history. From 2023-25, he became the first Yellow Jacket in 24 years to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons, collecting 81 in 2023, 64 in 2024 and 77 last year.
He was a two-time All-ACC selection, a two-year captain and an All-ACC academic honoree. The Dacula native earned his Georgia Tech degree in business administration in December.
Efford appeared in only three games this season but continued producing at his customary pace, making 27 tackles. He matched his career high with 13 in the opener against Colorado and recorded eight against Tennessee despite reinjuring his surgically repaired shoulder.
After missing two games, Efford returned Saturday and made six tackles in Georgia Tech’s 28-25 victory over No. 23 Duke. His final appearance included one last signature play: a tackle for a 1-yard loss early in the fourth quarter with the Yellow Jackets protecting a three-point lead.
Coach Brent Key said Efford’s value extended far beyond the middle of the defense.
“He’s not just one of the best linebackers to ever wear the White and Gold, but even more importantly, he’s one of the best teammates and leaders,” Key said. “Through his talent, passion, toughness and world-class work ethic, he created lifelong memories for his coaches, teammates and Georgia Tech fans.”
Efford helped the Yellow Jackets win 30 games, reach three consecutive bowls and post three straight top-four finishes in the ACC. Georgia Tech went 6-1 against ranked conference opponents with Efford on the field during his final four seasons.
The physical style that made him beloved also contributed to his decision. Efford said he had been warned that his body eventually would pay for playing at only one speed.
“I never wanted to be the reason somebody else had to give more because I chose to give less,” he said. “My brothers deserved everything I had in me.”
Efford’s playing career is over, but his influence will remain on the sideline.
“He might not be on the field for us moving forward,” Key said, “but he’ll always be a part of the Georgia Tech football program.”
Efford put it more simply:
“I never played this game to see how long I could last. I played it to see how much I could give.
“And I gave it everything.”
