TIM BURCH: Bishop puts leadership for Georgia farmers over politics

It is rare these days to see a member of Congress who is willing to put the needs of his district over politics. On early May 24, we saw U.S. Congressman Sanford Bishop do just that.

After meeting for more than 12 hours, the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture voted to pass the 2024 Farm Bill, which had multiple provisions supporting south Georgia farmers and rural communities. Congressman Bishop was one of only four Democrats who supported this critical piece of legislation.

Congressman Bishop has been a leader for Georgia agriculture for his entire service in Congress, but this time his support required looking past political party pressure and keeping the needs of his constituents at the forefront. As a board member of the Georgia Peanut Commission, I have met with Congressman Bishop on multiple occasions regarding peanut producers who have been struggling due to increases in farm inputs, labor shortages, trade barriers and supply chain issues. He has been available in Georgia and Washington to hear our concerns and work to find solutions.

While the 2024 Farm Bill has many steps to go before final passage, I thank Congressman Bishop for showing strong character and an unwavering determination to represent us.
