THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Environmental Health Manager Spencer Bowen has been named Environmental Health Specialist of the Year for the Southwest Public Health District, officials with the district announced.

“Congratulations to Spencer for being a credit to his profession and serving as a model to his colleagues,” Southwest Health District Environmental Health Director Justin Smith, who presented Bowen with the award, said.

Bowen has served as the environmental health manager in Thomas County since February 2017. He began his career as an environmental specialist in Cobb County in 2004 before transferring to Cook County, where he worked until 2010.

He joined Southwest Health District in Decatur County before moving to Thomas County in October 2010.

Officials with the district said Bowen’s recognition is “well-deserved,” adding that the county’s health department and the community are glad to have him providing service.

“My staff makes work both enjoyable and rewarding, and I can’t thank them enough for all their hard work,” Bowen said.

During time off from work, Bowen can be found with his wife, Claire, and their children, Luke and Michaela.

“And I try to get out on the water and fish whenever I get a chance,” he said.
