ALBANY – The Sowega Council on Aging has announced plans for a week of fun, free activities in celebration of Active Aging Week, Sept. 30-Oct. 4. Active Aging Week is an annual event that promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthy lifestyle regardless of age. This year’s theme is designed to inspire mature adults to embrace wellness, fitness and an active life.
Izzie Sadler, the executive director of SCOA, highlighted the importance of the initiative, saying, “Active Aging Week is all about empowering our seniors to live life to the fullest. Staying active improves mental, physical and emotional well-being. At SCOA, we are committed to providing the resources and opportunities to help seniors maintain their independence and vitality.”
The week will kick off with an Open House Sept. 30-Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon each day at the SCOA Regional Resource Center at 335 W. Society Ave. in Albany. Attendees can participate in free wellness activities, explore fitness classes and enjoy refreshments and giveaways, including a free Active Aging Week T-shirt, while supplies last.
On Oct. 3, SCOA will host a Lunch & Learn event at 11 a.m. Oncology Wellness Program Coordinator for the Phoebe Cancer Center Robin McCord will present important cancer prevention tips. A boxed lunch is included. While the Lunch & Learn is free, seating is limited and registration is required by Sept. 30. Interested participants should call (229) 432-0994 Option 3 to secure a spot.
The week will wrap up with a fun-filled walk at Turtle Grove Park Oct. 4. The event begins at 9 a.m. with a warm-up session, followed by the walk at 9:30 a.m. Participants can choose to walk 1 mile, 2 miles or more along the scenic Riverfront Trail. Free bottled water and blood pressure checks will be available for all participants.
“We want everyone to come out and enjoy these events,” Sadler said. “Whether you’re trying a new fitness class, attending our Lunch & Learn event or joining us for a walk at Turtle Grove Park, this is a great opportunity to stay active, make new friends and learn something new.”
