Baconton Charter students earn awards at robot drone competition

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Students from Baconton Community Charter School were among the top competitors in the recent Robot Drone League Championship, hosted at East Tennessee State University here.
More than 300 students on teams from Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia competed. Georgia representatives included three teams from Baconton Charter.
Some of the awards handed out during the weekend of competition included:
RDL Division I (high school):
— Engineering Award: RDL Team No. 181, Magnetude Robotics (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
— Top Rookie Award: RDL Team No. 1010, Blackman Middle/HS (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
— Professor’s Award: RDL Team No. 133, Galactic Gears (Grundy, Va.)
— Judges Award: RDL Team No. 105, BluTech Robotics (Baconton, Ga.)
— Top Dog: RDL No. 148, Volunteers (Hawkins County, Tenn.)
Top Score Award:
3rd Place — 3,370 points; RDL Team No. 128, Chuckey-Doak, Tenn.
2nd Place — 3,525 points; RDL Team No. 1004, SCAR—Stewarts Creek, Tenn.
1st Place — 4,475 points, RDL team No. 181, Magnetude Robotics, Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
Division I Champions Award: No. 181, Magnetude Robots (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
RDL Division II (middle school):
— Engineering Award: RDL Team No. 200, Lee Cyber Generals, (Lee County, Va.)
— Top Rookie Award: RDL Team No. 204, Team GOLF, (Baconton, Ga.)
— Professor’s Award: RDL Team No. 202, Syntax Anchor, (Baconton, Ga.)
— Judges Award: RDL Team No. 215 Bermuda Bots, (Grundy, Va.)
Top Score Award:
3rd Place —- 2,475 points; Syntax Anchor RDL Team No. 202, (Baconton, Ga.)
2nd Place —- 2,600 points; Team Golf, RDL Team No. 204, (Baconton, Ga.)
1st Place — 2,775 points; Lee JV Team, RDL Team No. 200 (Lee County, Va.)
Division II Champions Award: RDL Team No. 200, Lee Cyber Generals, (Lee County, Va.)
RDL Jr. Division III (K-5)
Three teams represented a pilot cohort of the new Robot Drone League Jr. initiative for K-5 grade levels.
The teams were:
ETSU Jr. Bucs — RDL Jr. Team No. 301, ETSU University School, Johnson City, Tenn.
Gamecocks — RDL Jr. Team No. 303, Sulphur Springs Elementary, Jonesborough, Tenn.
Cyber Cadets — RDL Jr. Team No. 305, Jonesville, Va.
All three teams were presented with the “PIONEER AWARD” for demonstrating grit and perseverance.
