Albany unemployment rate drops heading into new year

ATLANTA — Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Albany recorded an unemployment rate of 3.6% in November, down four-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.5%.
“As we prepare to ring in a new year, Georgia’s future is bright,” Thompson said in a news release. “With holiday shopping and retail kicking back up, Georgia’s unemployment rates are dropping faster than holiday deals. Coupled with a soaring job market and a work force ready to take on limitless opportunities, Georgia is well on the road to success.”
The labor force increased in Albany by 698 and ended the month with 66,188. That number went up by 1,825 when compared to November of 2022.
Albany finished the month with 63,830 employed residents. That number increased by 946 over the month and rose by 1,723 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Albany ended November with 64,600 jobs. Jobs increased by 700 over the month and were up 1,400 over the year.
In November, initial unemployment claims decreased by 138 (-39%) in Albany. A comparison of November 2023 claims to November 2022 shows that claims were down by 104 (-33%).
