ATLANTA — Award-winning filmmaker and Atlanta native Michael Cooke will debut his new film “Freeman Hospitality” Friday. The dystopian post-apocalyptic movie was filmed in Albany.
In 2055, America is on the brink of a second civil war. A black, family-run, private security company escorts a foreign journalist into the badlands of south Georgia to interview a local warlord.
The Freemans, Grace (Barin Nelyse), Jacob (Phoenix Higgins), and Joy (Ernestine Johnson) run their business in the rural town of Albany. The mission is to escort Natalie Pembroke (Sasha Hatfield), a BBC journalist, into the volatile and dangerous countryside for an interview with Jorge (Lauren Hough), a local warlord.
Through the lens of the Freemans, an entrepreneurial black family, the short film examines a dark American future of our own making. Climate change, overindulgence in fossil fuels, a polarized political climate, and our lax prosecution laws for financial crimes have all created the perfect storm for the fall of the most powerful country and the people left behind.
“Freeman Hospitality was written and directed by Cooke and produced by Shandra McDonald and Errol Sadler.
