Suicide reported outside Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital
Emergency room kept operational after suspected suicide

ALBANY — An investigation is underway regarding the circumstances of a suspected suicide outside of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital on Tuesday evening.
Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler said the individual was a 74-year-old man.
“We extend our sympathy to the family of the victim of last night’s suicide,” officials from Phoebe said in a statement. “We are fully cooperating with the investigation into this incident and appreciate the Albany Police Department’s assistance in keeping our emergency room fully operational throughout their investigation.
“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff is always our top priority, and we have confidence in our security plans and procedures. Last night’s incident occurred outside our main ER. While we are sorry for the loss of life, we are grateful no one at the hospital was ever in danger, and it appears no one actually saw the incident occur.”
An APD report on the incident said contact was made with a Dougherty County Police Department officer at around 8:15 p.m. The report said the man arrived at the hospital in his 2006 Ford F-350 and shot himself in the neck while still in the vehicle.
