ALBANY – The Monroe Golden Tornadoes traveled to Legacy Park on Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Sherwood Christian Eagles, winning the first game 10-4 before falling to the Eagles 5-1 in the second game.

In the opener, Monroe jumped out to a fast start, scoring seven runs in the first inning and building a 10-0 lead before Sherwood got on the board in the fourth. The inning began with Kyle Vicks and Javion Tinch drawing walks, followed by Talen Pugh blasting a home run over the left field fence, giving Monroe a quick 3-0 advantage. The Tornadoes continued to capitalize, scoring four more runs in the inning with just one hit, as Sherwood struggled with three hit batsmen and two errors. Vicks capped the rally with a double to center, driving in the final two runs.

Sherwood made a push to come back in the later innings. John Seward lined a triple to left field and scored on a single by Qwinton Murray. After Michael Merritt walked, an error by Monroe allowed Murray to score and moved Merritt to third. Evan Johnson then drove in Merritt with a fielder’s choice. Monroe made a pitching change, bringing in Javion Tinch, who secured the final two outs to end the game.

Nehemiah Tinch earned the win for Monroe, pitching four and one-third innings while allowing six hits and four runs. He walked three and struck out one. John Butler took the loss for Sherwood.

The second game played out differently as the Eagles took control early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Sherwood’s Tyler Mullis was dominant on the mound, pitching a one-hitter and leading his team to a 5-1 victory.

Merritt and Aaron Mackey hit back-to-back doubles to ignite the first-inning rally, while Mullis and Seward added singles to build a 3-0 lead. Pugh ended Mullis’ no-hit bid with a double to left to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning.

Mullis pitched five innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out two. Javion Tinch and Pugh took the mound for Monroe in the second game.

Sherwood will host Turner County on Thursday at Legacy Park, while Monroe is off until Monday when they face crosstown rival Westover.
