ALBANY- Westover senior Kemari Leverette swished a three-point jump shot as the clock shot buzzer sounded with nine seconds left in the game to give Westover a 48-47 come-from-behind win over crosstown rival Dougherty Tuesday night. Leverette scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Patriots outscored the Trojans 14-7 in the final period. The win improves Westover’s record to 3-2 on the season while the Trojans drop to 1-4.
With both teams relying on speed and defense, scoring was slow to start. Westover led 9-8 after the first quarter and Dougherty held a 24-22 lead at the half, thanks to a late basket by Markelle Jones. Two three-point shots by Dougherty’s Jai’on Burns gave the Trojans a 30-24 lead early in the third quarter and the Trojans actually pushed the lead to nine points – 43-34 after the first play of the fourth quarter when Jawaun Jinks swished a long three. But that didn’t last long as the Patriots started chipping away at the lead and Westover tied the game at 45-45 on a putback by Tracy Williams with less than two minutes to play.
After a timeout, Dougherty’s Kaleke Singletary-Jinks drove to the basket and laid up two points with 53 seconds remaining to give Dougherty a 47-45 lead. Westover had possession and was trying to set up a play but could not find an open shot against the Dougherty defense. Just before the shot clock buzzer was about to sound, guard Kavon Johnson whisked the ball to Leverette just off the top of the key and shot the ball as the buzzer sounded and it got nothing but net as the Westover crowd roared. With nine seconds remaining the Trojans set up a play for the last shot, but the ball bounced off the rim to give the Patriots the win.
Leverette led the Patriots with 15 points and Williams followed with 12.
Burns led Dougherty with 17 points and Jones added eight.
Westover has a date with Valdosta Friday night against the Wildcats, but the Trojans are off until next Tuesday when they will host Westover on their home court.
