Southwest Georgia downs Terrell Academy in Damascus, 12-3

DAMASCUS — Terrell Academy grabbed the early lead Tuesday afternoon, but defending state champion Southwest Georgia Academy answered with two big innings to claim a 12-3 season-opening victory.

The Lady Eagles struck first in the opening inning when Hadley Webb delivered an RBI single to give Terrell Academy a 1-0 advantage.

Southwest Georgia Academy responded in the bottom of the second, erupting for six runs on eight hits to take control of the game. KJ Spann provided the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run single as the Lady Warriors built a 6-1 lead.

The Lady Warriors put the game away in the fourth, scoring six more runs. Ryleigh Moseley drove in a run with a single before Ava Rathel added a two-run single. Spann capped the outburst with a three-run home run to left field.

Despite the loss, Terrell Academy produced plenty of offense.

Kacy Sheffield led the Lady Eagles with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Webb went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Caroline Presley also collected two hits.

Rathel earned the victory for Southwest Georgia Academy, allowing three runs on eight hits over five innings.

Presley took the loss for Terrell Academy after pitching into the second inning.

Southwest Georgia Academy finished with 14 hits, led by Addison Mock’s three-hit performance. Spann drove in a game-high five runs, while Rathel, Charlee Davis and Moseley each added multiple hits.

Although the final score was lopsided, Terrell Academy showed encouraging signs offensively with eight hits, including multi-hit performances from Sheffield, Webb and Presley, as the Lady Eagles continue to build toward the remainder of the season.
