Huckaby’s five touchdowns lead Terrell over Calhoun

EDISON— Quin’travieon Huckaby spent most of Friday night running away from Calhoun County’s defense.

Then, with the game on the line, he made the play that stopped the Cougars.

Huckaby rushed for 237 yards and five touchdowns and then intercepted a deflected pass in the closing seconds to seal Terrell County’s 34-30 victory over Calhoun County.

It was quite a night for the Greenwave standout.

Huckaby carried 20 times, averaging nearly 12 yards per attempt, and scored five of Terrell County’s touchdowns. His biggest run went for a 61-yard score.

But Calhoun County had a running back putting together an even bigger yardage total on the other side.

Junior Quintin Edwards rushed 17 times for 283 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars, averaging 16.6 yards per carry.

Together, Huckaby and Edwards turned the game into a running back showcase. The two combined for 520 yards and eight touchdowns on just 37 carries.

In the end, however, Huckaby found one more way to affect the outcome.

With Calhoun County trying to pull out the game in the final seconds, Jeremiah Andredes deflected a Cougars pass and Huckaby came down with the interception to preserve the four-point victory.

Huckaby also finished with four tackles, completing a night in which he made an impact on both sides of the football.

The Greenwave needed it.

Terrell County didn’t get much from its passing game, but it didn’t have to with Huckaby and Wycavion Buchanan moving the ball on the ground. Buchanan added 63 yards on eight carries as the Greenwave rushed for at least 300 yards between the two backs.

Jacorey Williams completed 6 of 13 passes for 45 yards and Kamarian Thomas led the receivers with four catches for 30 yards.

Thomas also led Terrell County defensively with 10 tackles. Buchanan finished with eight tackles in addition to his work in the backfield, while Dominique Polite forced two fumbles.

Those defensive plays proved important on a night when Edwards and the Calhoun County running game continually threatened to take control.

But when Terrell County needed one final stop, a player who had spent the night delivering touchdowns delivered the game-clinching turnover instead.

The victory improved the Greenwave to 3-2.

Terrell County returns home Friday night to face Early County (0-4) in Dawson.
