LEESBURG — A Lee County man was killed on Wednesday when the motor scooter he was driving collided with a pickup truck, according to authorities with the Georgia State Patrol.

Officers say John Harrell, 25, of Leesburg was traveling west on Chokee Road in Lee County around 4:30 p.m.when the side of his pickup truck was struck by a motor scooter driven by James Edwin Moody, 76, who was traveling south from Highway 195.

Trooper David Fretwell with the Georgia State Patrol in Albany said Moody was killed instantly in the collision.

Harrell said Fretwell indicated he never saw Moody until the collision, but may have been distracted by taking a drink of water.

“Harrell volunteered to have a blood test to check for alcohol or drugs,” Fretwell said, “but at the scene he didn’t seem impaired.”

On Thursday, both Harrell and a passenger in the truck were being interviewed, Fretwell said, and the accident site continues to be investigated by GSP’s Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team (SCRT). According to Fretwell, any potential charges are pending results of the investigation and blood test.
