Albany State’s Ty Grover earns Player of the Week honor

ATLANTA — Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference officials recognized standout performances across the league Tuesday, naming Ty Grover of Albany State University as Player of the Week and Lefrederick Wooten of Benedict College as Pitcher of the Week for games played last week.

Grover, a senior first baseman from Spring Hill, Florida, powered the Golden Rams through a conference series sweep with a dominant stretch at the plate. He delivered multiple multi-hit performances, highlighted by a perfect 5-for-5 outing with three RBIs in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Grover combined consistency with timely power, adding a home run during the series while repeatedly putting pressure on opposing defenses. His production extended throughout the weekend, as he drove in runs, crossed the plate multiple times and came through with key hits — including clutch contributions in the series finale that helped Albany State rally for a late-game victory.

The honor reflects what has become a growing trend for the Golden Rams, who have leaned on Grover’s bat in the heart of their lineup during a strong run of conference play.

On the mound, Wooten turned in one of the most dominant pitching performances of the week across the SIAC. The Benedict junior right-hander tossed a complete-game one-hitter in the opening game of the Tigers’ series against Tuskegee.

Wooten carried a no-hit bid deep into the contest before allowing a solo home run in the ninth inning — the only blemish on an otherwise masterful outing. He struck out eight, walked just two and needed only 99 pitches to navigate all nine innings while facing 32 batters.

The performance improved Wooten’s record to 8-1 on the season and further solidified his role as a workhorse for Benedict’s staff.
