National Honey Bee Day to be celebrated at Carter Boyhood Farm
By Staff Reports
PLAINS — Things are going to be buzzing Saturday at the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm in Archery.
The event is a celebration of National Honey Bee Day and a recollection of the activities on the farm when the former president was a youth.
“Bee keeping was an important aspect of the Carter farm during President Jimmy Carter’s youth,” officials with the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site said. “He fondly recalls that honey was an important source of income as well as a welcome addition to the family’s meals.”
During Carter’s youth, the family maintained nearly two dozen hives on their property.
The historic site will host program on honey bees, the state insect of Georgia, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday. The programs will include information about basic bee keeping, including how to maintain a hive. There also will be an observation hive so visitors can better understand how honey bees work. Booths displaying items made from honey bee byproducts, sampling of different flavors of honey and activities for children will also be at the event.
The programs will be presented by area beekeeping associations, park officials said.
