This year’s Mannheim Steamroller Christmas tour marks the 40th anniversary of the tour that has brought Christmas cheer to millions all over the world.
“This is the 40th anniversary of our tour, making it the longest-running tour in the entertainment industry,” MS founder Chip Davis said in a recent interview. “Our live performances offer something you don’t get on a CD: You can’t see the band playing live with a 20-piece orchestra.”
Davis, who now conducts the business behind Mannheim Steamroller rather than playing with the ensemble after an automobile accident left him with limited feeling and movement in his neck and right arm, said he and artists involved in the production are proud to be a part of peoples’ Christmas.
“It is one of the biggest honors that you can possibly have: to be invited into people’s homes. … I absolutely love it and love being a part of their families,” he said.
A music major whose love for the art led him to “explore new ways of expressing music,” Davis created a sound he calls “18th century classical rock.” He named the art collective that created his music Mannheim Steamroller for Mannheim, Germany, home of Mozart, one of Davis’ favorite composers, and the 18th-century musical phrase Mannheim Valse, a term that literally meant “roller.”
His project has become one of music’s great stories with 19 gold records, 8 platinum albums and four multiplatinum releases.
