Renowned guitarist to perform at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Albany

ALBANY — Internationally recognized classical guitarist Zoran Dukić, who has fascinated music lovers on five continents, will be in concert Feb. 20 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Albany.
The 6:30 p.m. concert, part of the series sponsored by the Fred Sharpe family, is free and open to the public. St. Paul’s is located at 212 N. Jefferson St.
“St. Paul’s is so fortunate to be able to welcome such an incredible performer,” the Rev. Galen A. Mirate, rector of St. Paul’s, said. “We thank the Sharpe family for making this delightful event possible. We hope everyone will come to enjoy this world-class performance and give Zoran Dukić a warm welcome to our community.”
Born in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1969, Dukić was introduced to the guitar when he was 6 years old. His subsequent mastery of the instrument made him one of the most distinguished classical guitarists of our time, with performances, both solo and with orchestra, leaving long-lasting impressions on audiences.
He also has earned rave reviews from music critics, who have lauded his technical brilliance and tenderness that have resulted in unforgettable evenings that have brought audiences to their feet with the first piece.
Dukić graduated from the Music Academy of Zagreb under the guidance of Darko Petrinjak. He completed his studies with Hubert Käppel at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. In his “tour de force” competition years (1990-97), Dukić won virtually every prize available. He is the only guitarist to win both of the “Andrés Segovia” competitions in Granada and Palma de Mallorca. He was the first non-Spaniard to win the best interpretation of Spanish music award in Spain’s top guitar competition that is patronized by the Spanish royal family.
With his special affinity for the Spanish and South American musical idiom — the core repertoire of classical guitar — his performances have inspired composers to dedicate works to him. Music by J.S. Bach is the focal point of his musical life. Currently, his programs present a range of music from Bach to Britten, Sor to Albéniz, and Tárrega to Villa-Lobos and Leo Brouwer.
Dukić also is inspiring tomorrow’s great guitarists. He has taught at the Escuela Superior in Barcelona and the Hochschule Für Musik in Aachen. Currently, he is teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague and as a guest artist in Seville and Cardiff Music universities. He has one of the most successful classes in Europe and regularly gives master classes all over the world.
