ALBANY — Marines onboard Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany volunteered to help turn an event sponsored by the Albany Recreation and Parks Department into a night to remember for southwest Georgia seniors.

The Marines served as escorts and dance partners during the recent 25th annual Senior Prom, presented by the city of Albany’s Rec and Parks Department and held at the Albany Civic Center.

Much as the junior/senior prom is a landmark event for high school students, the city’s annual Senior Prom is an opportunity for members of the community “of a certain age” to bring back the good old days when their hair was not silver and white — or all gone — and they had more pep in their step. But don’t be fooled: The Marines who volunteered to serve as dance partners and escorts got a workout as their partners proved they still had plenty of moves to go around.

As is typically the case, the Prom drew a capacity crowd, leaving MCLB-Albany Marines and other volunteer groups hopping throughout the night.

“For many of us, the Senior Prom is one of the events we look forward to most each year,” one promgoer said while taking a break from the festivities. “Some of us never got to go to a high school prom back in the day, so it’s a good feeling to have this opportunity. Plus, we’re still enjoying life.

“This is a special night for all of us. We may be a little sore in the morning, but right now, we’re having a ball.”

Marines from MCLB-Albany found themselves hustling — and boogalooing — to keep up with their dance partners at the city of Albany’s recent Senior Prom.
