Albany Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, an official auxiliary of the Air Force, meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport. The squadron is recruiting volunteers. Cadet members, ages 12-18, fly, learn to lead, perform search and rescue, and get in shape. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with speaking events 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Speakers are to include Dr. Jalai Ghali, chief of cardiology at the Mercer University School of Medicine; John Shannon, director of Heart Health Care Technology at Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood, Fla.; Dr. Pablo Rengifo, cardiovascular disease specialist at Phoebe, and Dr. Mark Cohen, interventional cardiologist at Phoebe. Mended Hearts is the nation’s largest cardiac peer-to-peer support organization with more than 300 chapters, including one in Albany, and 20,000 members in the U.S. Volunteers visit cardiac patients in more than 460 hospitals, making nearly 215,000 visits each year.
