Albany Museum of Art plans re-opening celebration in late August
Members-only, public receptions planned at art museum
Staff Reports
ALBANY – After months of storm-recovery activities, the Albany Museum of Art is getting ready to re-open its doors.
Museum officials will hold a celebration reception Aug. 24, ushering in several new exhibits, including the “Man Behind the Canvas” collection featuring photographs of the iconic Norman Rockwell at work.
“Despite the closure of the facility due to the storm, we have continued to provide programs such as our youth summer art camp with the help of area organizations like the Thronateeska Heritage Center and the Flint RiverQuarium,” Museum Director Paula Williams said.” However, it is good to know we will soon be back home in the museum.”
Museum officials will host a members-only reception from 5-7 p.m. on the 24th. Invited guests will enjoy giveaways, hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. From 7-9 p.m. that evening, the reception will be open to the public, with a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. A family-friendly opening is planned for 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 26 and will include children’s activities.
The museum was heavily damaged during the Jan. 2 storm that tore through Albany. Renovations to the first floor of the museum will be complete in time for the celebration, allowing the AMA to reopen several galleries, the Hodges Sales Gallery, the facility’s classroom and the Willson Auditorium, which will once again be available for event rentals.
AMA staff and board of trustees members will continue to explore options for relocating the museum in downtown Albany, but the reopening on Meadowlark Drive will allow the AMA to once again offer programming, exhibits and events in its own facility, museum officials said.
In addition to the Rockwell exhibit, other exhibits that will debut with the re-opening include “Social Graces: Mixed Media Journal Entries,” featuring paintings by Albany native Katie Bacon, and “If Memory Serves,” highlighting the metalwork of Abigail Heuss.
Other events scheduled at the museum include “Touch A Truck” on Oct. 21 and the annual black tie gala Feb. 10.
