ALBANY — A residence on Eight Mile Road in Dougherty County has been named the September Yard of the Month by the Daffodil Garden Club.

“This outstanding yard is located about 3 miles down Eight Mile Road,” Marideane Maxwell, chair of the club’s selection committee said.” You will not have any trouble finding it because it is a standout!

“Mary Davis, a senior citizen, does all the work and it is her great love.”

Davis has transformed the landscaping over nearly four decades.

“She raised two boys who are grown with their own families,” Maxwell said, “and when she first bought the land and built her home in 1979 she started with no yard.”

Maxwell noted that Davis saved trees and plants that others might not have tried to rescue.

“The beautiful Magnolias that outline one side of her property were very small as well as pot bound, but she worked the roots loose and look at them now,” Maxwell said.”The three large concrete pots on the back patio are filled with plants that others had given up on.”

Roses figure into the yardscaping, she said.

“There is a large round bed in the front that is filled with Knock Out roses and on the opposite side of the house there is a bed of tree roses,” she said. “Outstanding trees, shrubs and plants are well tended as well as is the lush green lawn.

“She works constantly keeping her home a beautiful showplace that gives her pleasure as well as others that pass her way.”

Daffodil Garden Club recognizes an outstanding yard each month in the hope that other residents will be inspired to add beauty to their own dwellings. The club accepts nominations from the public. To nominate a residence, call (229) 436-6888 and leave the address.

Daffodil Garden Club meets at 11 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month September through May at the Federated Garden Center on 808 Fifth Ave. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 20.
