ALBANY — The 600 Greenwood Drive residence of Dee and Steve Goss has been selected as July’s Yard of the Month by the Daffodil Garden Club.
“Dee and Steve Goss have lived here about 18 years, and Dee (who is the yard person) says there was no yard when they moved in,” said Marideane Maxwell, chair of the club’s selection committee for the recognition program. “She has really transformed the place into a sight to behold while raising children and working.”
The home is on a corner lot, and “there is not an inch that is not perfection,” Maxwell said.
“You must ride by (really slow) and be inspired to create some beauty at your home,” she said. “Dee has racks of plants next to her greenhouse that she roots and shares.
“What better way to make a friend than passing along a plant?”
The Yard of the Month is a program the Daffodil Garden Club conducts to recognize a home for outstanding yardscaping. It also is designed to inspire and encourage others to pay attention to the place they own or rent and to do something to show pride in their home.
“Sometimes just one small improvement will make a world of difference,” Maxwell said.
The club meets on the third Tuesday of the month September through May. While the club doesn’t meet during the summer, it recognizes residences each month and accepts nominations from the public. To nominate a home with outstanding yardscaping, call (229) 436-6888 and leave a message with the suggested location.

This week’s War Horse story follows the systemic failures before and after the death of Cpl. Drew Mobley who was the third in two years at Marine Corps Base Quantico to die by suicide.
The annual juried exhibition, one of the region’s largest showcases of visual art, features approximately 46 artists and nearly 90 works spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography and mixed media.
From the street, strands of purple ribbon wind around the white columns of the historic theater, hinting at the story waiting beyond its doors. Inside the foyer, a carefully curated slideshow flickers across a large screen, cycling through the faces of the cast. Some are seasoned performers. Others are stepping onto a stage for the very first time. Teachers stand alongside former students. Parents perform beside their children. People who worship in different churches, work different jobs and come from different corners of Southwest Georgia gather beneath the same lights to tell the same story.
