Grammy winner Lalah Hathaway performing Sunday in Albany
Five-time Grammy winner holds record for R&B wins

ALBANY — Albany area concertgoers on Sunday will get a preview of music from multiple Grammy-winner Lalah Hathaway’s upcoming album “Honestly,” which is set to be released this fall on her new label, Hathaway Entertainment.
Featured at the 8 p.m. Sunday concert at the Albany Municipal Auditorium will be her latest single, “I Can’t Wait,” which was released July 21.
In a telephone interview Friday from Las Vegas, where she was performing with Mary J. Blige, Hathaway said audience members should have one expectation — a great show. “We try to put as much into the show as possible,” she said, “give them as much music and as much of an experience as possible.
“We have the new single that just came out … ‘I Can’t Wait.’ The video premiered today (Friday) on BET. We’re going to give them a taste of the new album, and we’re also going to play some stuff from the last 25 years or so.”
Hathaway has five Grammys, including the 2017 Grammys for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Angel” and Best R&B Album, “Lalah Hathaway Live.” She holds the record for most consecutive R&B Grammys won. Among the performers she has collaborated with are Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Robert Glasper, Gregory Porter, Tiffany Gouché, The Internet, Hiatus Kaiyote, Terrace Martin, KING, Thundercat and Kamasi Washington. She has sold more than 567,000 albums in the United States.
Her music, Hathaway said, has been influenced by all the sounds she grew up listening to: R&B, jazz, gospel, country and others.
“It’s soul music,” she said. “I grew up listening to all of that music. You definitely hear the influence of different genres of music.”
The biggest influence, she said, came from her father, the late Donny Hathaway. Donny Hathaway died when she was 1o.
“I grew up in a house of musicians,” she said. “My parents were both musicians. (Her mother, Eulaulah Hathaway, is an accomplished musician.) They were probably my biggest influences in terms of music education and listening to music, making me aware of different types of music.”
Inspiration for her music, she said, can come from unexpected places. The secret is to firmly grasp it when it arrives, because it can disappear quickly.
“I can find it anywhere,” Hathaway said. “I can find it in the river, I can find it in a meal, I can find it in a movie, I can find it in a child’s face, I can find it in laughter. It’s just everywhere.
“The key is to follow all those sources of inspiration. I don’t always do that. Sometimes I’m hit and inspired by something quickly, and I don’t tend to follow it. It’s sort of like waking up from a dream and not writing it down. It’s so present in your mind and 10 minutes later you have no idea what it was. But I do definitely find myself inspired by many different things.”
Hathaway started performing right out of high school, releasing her first album in 1990. The next one will be released this fall on her new label, Hathaway Entertainment. The imprint is in partnership with distribution company Caroline and is planned to be a haven for independent artists that also will enable Hathaway control of her own work.
“’Honestly’ will be the first project that we put out,” she said. “We’re looking forward to presenting new music. I don’t know exactly what it’s going to be, who the artists are. I have some idea as to the type of people I’d like to present. I just want to put out some great projects over the next couple of years.
“Also, having my own label will allow me to put out some of the project-type records that I want to put out as well. I’m excited about all the possibilities. There’s definitely a better sense of control and quality control.”
Hathaway said she embraces connecting with fans through social media, including Facebook, Twitter (@LalahHathaway) and other platforms.
“In 1998 or ‘97, I built a website that was really like Facebook or Twitter for my fans to communicate with me and for me to be able to talk with them,” she said. “It is a super natural space for me to dwell in. I really enjoy my social media outreach with the fans for sure.”
