It’s officially almost here! It’s that time of the year when it starts to get warmer and the outfits get a tad bit fancier. Some have been dreaming of this season since last fall.

What is this season? None other than prom season!

Throughout the years, there have been many changes when it comes to prom, ranging from the different styles to the prom decorations. But even with these changes, prom is still defined as a teen’s “greatest night of his or her life.” That may or may not be true depending on who you ask, but it certainly is a night to remember.

And what about those amazing new ways to ask someone to the prom? Those are called “promposals.”

Promposals can be unique. My dear friend I-Asia Tucker-Mimms received a promposal recently and she was very excited in sharing her story.

Just like any other day, Tucker-Mimms was at the local Sonic and happened to be eating a burger when her good friend Jarrett Smith popped up out of nowhere with a sign reading: “There’s no other CHICK I’d rather go to prom with.” He was referring to Chick-fil-A and even brought Tucker-Mimms some Chick-fil-A along with the sign.

When I asked her how she felt about the promposal, she answered with a huge smile, “I was really surprised. I had no idea it was going to happen and I’m happy I said yes.”

Another aspect of prom season is the different styles. Looking back at the difference between prom dresses and tuxes over the years, change definitely can be identified.

Dresses covered the body more, and suits were more vivid. These days, dresses show a little bit more and tuxes are usually plainer and not as noticeable.

I asked LaShonja Perry how she felt on the different styles of now and then and she answered, “I feel that back then there really wasn’t much of a contest to see who would dress better. It was just all about showing up and having fun. But now, the styles are more individual and everyone can express themselves more in what they wear.”

The final aspect of prom I’d like to talk about would the age-old question everyone asks — should I go alone or should I get a date?

Some prefer to go with friends and others prefer to go with a date. In my opinion, it’s all about what makes you comfortable. As long as you’re having fun, that’s all that matters. So don’t be afraid to go alone. Just make sure to have a good time!
