LEESBURG — Lee County High School’s Shelby Bennett was awarded the Best Actress honors recently in this year’s State One-Act Play Competition. Bennett, a junior, played the role of Molly in the school’s production of the Broadway-hit show “Peter and the Starcatcher.”

In October, Bennett was also named Best Actress in this year’s region play competition. She received the Best Actress award at last year’s region contest as well.

The state competition was held at Veterans High School in Kathleen. Lee County competed against the other seven 6A schools from across the state that had won their respective region competitions.

“Everyone worked so hard, and I am proud of my winning the Best Actress award at State, knowing that I was representing the best efforts of the entire cast and crew and our director, Mrs. (Dotty) Davis,” Bennett said.

At the state competition, the Lee County production of “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a re-imagining of the Peter Pan story, received scores of 98, 98, and 97 points (out of 100 possible points) from the three judges, but the show was not eligible for consideration as an award winner because the performance exceeded the allowed time limit.

“We are very proud of the work that this year’s cast and crew accomplished. We’re proud of Shelby and the other Lee County performers who received individual recognition at the region level,” Davis said. “Our show has received raves from the far corners of the state. Lee County’s ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ will be remembered and emulated for many years to come.”
