‘One Funny Mother’ coming to Rylander Theatre
Dena Blizzard brings her Off-Broadway show to Americus

AMERICUS — The Rylander Theatre will kick off its 2016-17 season on Aug. 12 with “One Funny Mother.”
That’s the name of the one-woman comedy show by Dena Blizzard, a former Miss New Jersey turned mother of three who brings a comic look at everyday family life to the stage. Her show has been running Off-Broadway since April.
“Dena is making her second tour through Georgia, and we are excited to present her at the Rylander Theatre,” Rylander Director Heather Stanley said last week. “Her show is hysterically funny, a little sarcastic, but completely relatable.
“In her real life, she is married and has three kids, all of whom help to produce her videos on social media and her website. Even her own mother gets in on the action sometimes and makes a guest appearance in the videos.”
One of those videos, “Chardonnay Go,” a parody of the Pokemon Go craze that has swept the country, garnered Blizzard more than 10 million views in a short period.
During the 80-minute show, Blizzard laments how her life and marriage have changed since she became a mom as she wrestles with the eternal question, “Have I gone crazy since having these kids?” The show captures a “typical” day with sass and humor as she cleans house and gets ready for a big girls’ night out.
“The show opened at the renowned Off-Broadway theater New World Stages in April and was set for a limited run,” Stanley said, “but after rave reviews and continued success at the box office, the run has been extended until September.”
The show is an entertaining night out for men as well, she said.
“The whole point of the show is to demonstrate that it’s OK to not be the perfect mother or the perfect spouse and that there is humor to be found in all situations,” Stanley said. “The show makes for a great Girls Night Out, but that doesn’t mean that husbands and fathers won’t enjoy themselves as well.”
Presented by the Friends of the Rylander Theatre as part of the 2016-17 Presenter Series, the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for reserved seating and group discounts are available. Tickets can be purchased online at rylander.org or through the Rylander Box Office, which is open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays. The box office phone is (229) 931-0001.
