ATLANTA — The Westover High School Culinary Arts program earned first- and second-place awards at the recent annual Georgia ProStart Business Management and Culinary Competitions in Atlanta.

ProStart is the high school curriculum developed by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation to develop culinary and restaurant management skills.

The one-day competition featured culinary and management teams from around the state. Teams competed to earn the right to represent Georgia at the National Restaurant Association’s ProStart Invitational.

“We’ve been competing for eight years but have never won” Chef Robert Schley said. “We are delighted to be going to the nationals; it’s truly been a dream of ours. This team had a lot of camaraderie and followed directions this time. I would like to thank our industrial partners at Waffle House. They were very helpful.”

“We were all really focused this time,” team member Nykeria Williams said.

The second-place finish earned each culinary team member $15,000 in scholarship money, and the first-place finish earned each member of the management team $34,000 in scholarship money for a grand total of $147,000 in renewable and on-time scholarship offers.

The management team also earned the right to represent Georgia at the NPSI, which will be be held in Providence, R.I., April 27-29.

Culinary team members are Marhee Smith, Katelyn Bradley and Daniel Roberts

The school’s management team was represented by Olaysha Hicks, Williams and Kamron Ponder.

Eleven teams from across Georgia competed for a chance to win scholarships and the opportunity to represent the state in the National ProStart Competition.

The student teams had one hour to butcher a chicken, demonstrate five precision knife cuts, and then create a three-course fine dining meal for two that was judged by some of the best executive chefs in Atlanta. Students had to complete the challenge without running water or electricity.
