ALBANY — Charges are pending against an Albany man who was involved in a fatal accident on the 400 block of Radium Springs Road Thursday, Albany police said in a news release.

Justin Smith was the driver of a vehicle involved in the accident that fatally injured Juanita Alejos. Police said in the release that “alcohol, drugs, and speed were significant factors in the crash.”

APD is investigating the early-morning (2:01 a.m.) collision in which Alejos, who was driving a 2009 Pontiac G6 northbound on Radium, was struck from behind by Smith, who was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Impala. Alejos’ vehicle burst into flames after the collision, and she was trapped inside her vehicle.

A passenger in Alejos’ vehicle, Sarah Italien, was pulled from the vehicle, but not before she received burn injuries over 50% of her body. Smith suffered scalp lacerations that required stitches, the APD report said.
