ALBANY ─ Those looking for unique gift ideas can shop local from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the inaugural AMA Art Mart. The free event will be in the pecan grove on the museum grounds at 311 Meadowlark Drive.

“The vendors will have their tents in the grove like last month’s the Heart of Albany Festival,” Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem said. “This is a free event, so we hope to attract Christmas shoppers looking for unique, hand-made gifts created by talented local artists, artisans, crafters and small businesses.”

The early forecast for Saturday is sunny with a high in the 60s, but Vanoteghem said the event will move indoors if there is inclement or cold weather.

“We plan to make this a monthly event on second Saturdays,” she said. “We also want to grow it. We plan to add food trucks starting with the Jan. 11 Art Mart.”

Visitors to the Art Mart also can find things to do inside the AMA on Saturday. All exhibitions will be open 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The AMAzing Space kids’ activity center, usually open until 5 p.m., is open 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday. Admission to the AMA is free.

“And there is a special activity on Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon in the AMA Classroom,” Vanoteghem said. “The AMA Teen Art Board is leading an outreach program. Visitors can create a hand-made holiday card during the workshop, and the Teen Art Board will take them to residents of hospice care and nursing homes. There’s no cost to participate, and you will bring happiness to someone’s holiday.”
