LEESBURG — Lee County School System Athletic Director Rob Williams and Colquitt County AD Kevin Giddens are engaged in discussions to limit fallout from an incident during their game Friday night which resulted in two members of the Lee County sideline chain gang and a Colquitt assistant coach being escorted from from the field by police officers.
The game went into a lengthy delay with eight seconds left in the third quarter and the No. 1 Packers holding a 40-17 lead after a fight broke out on the Colquitt County sideline. The fight did not involve players, but Colquitt assistant coach Shawn Sutton was ejected as were two members of the chain gang.
Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst Woody Wommack was on the Colquitt sideline when the fracas began and made several tweets, including:
— “Only in the South: A Lee County fan working the chains just tried to fight a Colquitt County coach, mid-game.”
— “From what I’m told, chain gang member did land a punch.”
— “Colquitt County deputy: “Old boy pushed Coach Sutton, Coach Sutton pushed him back and Old boy swung on him.”
Lee County Sheriff deputies and Leeburg Police officers restored order and escorted the three men from the field.
“No one was detained and no arrests have been made,” LPD Chief Charles Moore said Monday morning.”Right now we are getting conflicting reports as to what started the fight. It’s ‘he said,’ ‘he said.’ We hope they can work things out.”
Williams and Giddens are working toward doing just that.
“We had a very unfortunate incident Friday, but their AD (Giddens) and I have spoken several times since then,” Williams said. “I want to stress that there is no animosity between our players, staffs and the schools. Right now we are handling this unfortunate incident at the staff level and I thnk both of us are ready to move on.
“We certainly don’t want to make a bad situation even worse.”
Giddens did not return a call seeking comment in the incident.
When play resumed after a 30 minute delay, Colquitt tacked on two more touchdowns for the 54-17 final.
