City closing Schley Avenue section for railroad repair work

ALBANY — The 1200 block of Schley Avenue will be closed to through traffic Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Bruce Maples, director of engineering for the city of Albany.

Maples said the city’s street department employees will be removing railroad tracks and repairing the roadway at the railroad grade crossing. The closure will begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Detour signage will be placed to guide motorists around the work zone. The detour will include Slappey Boulevard, Stuart Avenue and Palmyra Road. Motorists should expect delays and be alert to changing traffic conditions, Maples said.

Groups providing free haircuts, school supplies Sunday

ALBANY — Free haircuts for boys ages 5-18 and free school supplies will be provided Sunday afternoon during an event sponsored by the Albany State University Center for the African American Male and Salon Belle Cheveus. The event location is 1125 Dawson Road.

Antonio Leroy, executive director of CAAM, is expected to discuss the importance of scholarships and provide tips on academic success 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Also featured will be free games, food and beverages.

Amerigroup providing school supplies, screenings Monday

ALBANY — Amerigroup Community Care of Georgia will give away school supplies noon-3 p.m. Monday at Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany’s Jane Willson Unit at 1012 Holloway St.

The visit to Albany is one of 11 stops across Georgia to help students stock up on school supplies. Students will be given notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, binders, paper and other essential items. Families will have the opportunity to receive free health screenings and participate in games, snacks, entertainment and more.

Amerigroup Georgia seeks to improve health care access and quality for more than 375,000 low-income Georgians.
