MAKES INTRODUCTION

Kayla Marks, a 2011 honor graduate of Monroe High School and senior Biomedical Sciences major at R.I.T. (Rochester Institute of Technology) in Rochester, N. Y., was selected by Kelvin McDonald, vice president of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, to introduce broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien as speaker for last month’s “Expressions of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy.”

SCHOLARSHIP

The Southwest Georgia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects recently awarded scholarships to students studying architecture at the organization’s year-end Holiday Party in Moultrie. Lee Martin, of Albany, is a sophomore attending the College of Architecture and Construction Management at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta. Since high school, he has been engaged in architecture drafting competitions and community design projects. Martin was nominated by Mike Johnson of SRJ Architects in Albany.

MATH COUNTS

The annual Darton State College MATHCOUNTS competition was held earlier this month, with three area middle schools participating. Skyller Whiddon, of Sherwood Christian Academy, was the individual high scorer and the winner of the Countdown Round. Thomas County Middle School took home top team honors for the competition, while the Lee County team, coached by Heather Lawton and Kim Conley, won second place, and Sherwood Christian Academy, coached by Matthew Sheets, took home third.
