Artemis Georgia hosts deer hunts for women

COVINGTON — Twenty-eight women enjoyed the comradery of ladies-only deer hunts at various locations in Georgia this fall season. Artemis Georgia, of Georgia Wildlife Federation, hosted four camps (three donated by private landowners and one on a state managed Wildlife Management Area) welcoming new and returning female hunters into the woods.
Artemis Georgia strives to engage, encourage, and empower women in conservation through hunting, fishing and the shooting sports.
One attendee, Daphne Williams has a background in hunting but said she was thrilled to learn how hunting can be used as a tool to “make sure there is a balance in the deer population.”
Conservation is linked to hunting in complex ways. For example, hunters were the first advocates to limit market hunting and establish a federal conservation funding system. Today, the Department of Natural Resources of each state allows for or limits the number of individuals of a species hunted to maintain healthy populations in each area.
Artemis Georgia is just one of the state chapters of Artemis Sportswomen of the National Wildlife Federation. It is also supported by the Georgia R3 Initiative including Georgia Wildlife Federation, Georgia Department of Natural Resources-WRD, National Wild Turkey Federation, the Georgia Chapter of Safari Club International, and Ducks Unlimited.
