MORGAN — The Calhoun County School Board has hired DeKalb County principal Yolanda Turner as the new superintendent of the Calhoun County School System.

She will replace retiring superintendent Danny Ellis, who will step down in June after more than three years on the job.

Turner is currently the principal of The Champion School in Stone Mountain, a position she obtained after being named a DeKalb County Principal of the Year in 2013. Previously, she served as principal of Murphey Candler Elementary School and principal of Kingsley Charter School in DeKalb County. She has taught both elementary and middle school and has served as an assistant principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, all in DeKalb County.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University in 1986 and her Master’s Degree in Middle Grades Education from Clark Atlanta University in 1991. She obtained her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Sarasota in 1999. She is currently enrolled in the School Superintendent Professional Development Program from the Georgia School Superintendent’s Association and is expected to complete the program in 2015.

The Calhoun BOE chose Turner from nearly 40 applicants for the position.
