Center for the Arts changes its name

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — After 25 years, the Thomasville Cultural Center announced earlier this week that it will change its name to the Thomasville Center for the Arts.

The change is designed to celebrate the rich past of the Center, while ushering in a new era of creativity and connection. The Board of the Cultural Center conducted a community needs assessment to learn what local area residents wanted access to the most. Part of this effort is the result of new partnerships with other local organizations and businesses.

“I believe that the original mission of TCC to enrich the quality of life for people of all ages in our area of South Georgia and North Florida through cultural and educational experiences in the arts and humanities is being fulfilled,” said Peggy Rich, Board President.

To mark the occasion, Thomasville Center for the Arts’ board and staff will welcome the public to an array of events. The first is an opportunity for members to meet acclaimed artist Steve Penley.

Penley is best known for painting iconic, historic figures in a bold and modern way. His subjects include celebrities, as well as former presidents of the United States. Penley has also worked with Vince Dooley, former University of Georgia head Football Coach, on several projects, including Dooley’s latest book on horticulture.

His exhibit will be free and open to the public from February 4 – April 8, 2011.

In addition to Penley, the Center will feature emerging artist, Rebecca Cabassa, and works from the late Elmo Gideon.
