ALBANY — City of Albany Director of Engineering Bruce Maples has announced that the section of Broad Avenue between Broadway and Church streets in East Albany, which includes the railroad underpass, has been temporarily reopened to traffic.

The underpass was opened at 11 a.m. today to help with traffic congestion related to railroad crossing improvements by Georgia & Florida Railroad. That work is schedule to take place Monday through Wednesday of next week.

Current work on the underpass will cease until the railroad crossing work is complete.

After the crossing improvements are finished, East Broad Avenue will close again at the underpass to complete the remaining landscaping and painting work. Maples said once work resumes on the underpass, those improvements are expected to be complete within two weeks.

The underpass improvements are expected to be completed just prior to the opening of the new Broad Avenue Bridge, which is set to open sometime in August.

In the meantime, Maples advises motorists to expect delays and be aware of changing traffic conditions in the area around North Broadway Street and the East Broad underpass.
