GBI announces promotion of Chemistry Technical Leader

MIDLAND – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced recently the promotion of Amber Carroll to Technical Leader of the Forensic Chemistry Section at GBI’s Western Regional Crime Lab.
Carroll will be responsible for the training of scientist trainees and the continued training of current scientists to keep them up to date with current chemistry methodologies and best practices. She will also be responsible for coordinating proficiency tests for the Forensic Chemistry section as well as overseeing validations/verifications of new methods and instrumentation.
“Amber Carroll is an excellent leader and skilled scientist with diverse technical experience,” GBI Director Chris Hosey said. “Her expertise will greatly benefit the Forensic Chemistry Section as she steps into her new role as Technical Leader. I am confident that the scientists in the Forensic Chemistry Section will grow and thrive under her leadership.”
“The role of Technical Leader is a vital piece to the success of any section of the GBI Crime Lab,” GBI Crime Lab Director Cleveland Miles said. “Amber Carroll possesses the vast experience, determination, and technical skills necessary to train our scientists and offer technical guidance in the Forensic Chemistry Section.”
Carroll began her career with the GBI in 2014 in Drug Chemistry at GBI Headquarters. She transferred to the GBI’s Western Lab later that year, and began training in Fire Debris Analysis in 2015. She is currently one of only two scientists at the GBI completing both Drug Chemistry and Fire Debris casework. She has provided training for law enforcement officers in both cannabis identification and fire debris analysis at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. Throughout her career, Carroll also has trained new and current scientists within the the Forensic Chemistry section of the Crime Lab.
Carroll graduated from Winthrop University in 2012 with a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Forensic Chemistry.
She is originally from Central Florida and currently resides in Harris County, Georgia.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation comprises three primary divisions: the Georgia Crime Information Center, the Crime Laboratory, and the Investigative Division. The GBI has more than 900 employees and a current budget of $147,482,036.
