ATLANTA — The Georgia Legislature is taking a two-week break to grapple with a mounting budget shortfall.

The state Senate voted to adjourn when business wraps up today and return March 8. The House is set to take up the revised schedule this afternoon. Meetings will continue at the state Capitol, but the chambers won’t take up any legislation during the hiatus.

The Legislature is midway through its 40-day legislative session and had been scheduled to meet for those two weeks. Georgia is staring down a huge budget hole for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Democrats in the Senate voted against the new schedule, saying legislators should meet for a special session devoted solely to the state budget.
