Georgia DOT awards reconstruction, bridge funds

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a total of 10 projects in December 2023, including resurfacing, widening and reconstruction, and bridge construction.
The largest single investment, valued at approximately $62 million, is a reconstruction project covering 3.049 miles of widening and reconstruction for turn lanes and operational improvements on State Route 9 from Windward Parkway to the Forsyth County line in Fulton County. This project represents 53% of the awarded funds.
Approximately $36 million of the total awarded funds is designated for three resurfacing projects. The largest investment within these projects was for a resurfacing project in Muscogee County. The project includes 12.7 miles of milling, inlay, plant mix resurfacing on SR 22/SR 540 from west of SR 85 to the Talbot County line and is valued at approximately $13 million.
Three bridge construction projects amounting to nearly $16 million, or 14% of the awarded funds. The largest among them involves the construction of a 0.360-mile bridge and approaches on U.S. 29/SR 8 over the Hudson River in Franklin and Madison counties.
Three percent of the awarded funds were for two safety projects valued at approximately $3.7 million. One safety project focuses on enhancing intersections at various locations on SR 140 (Holcomb Bridge Road) and Spalding Drive (CR 1955) in Fulton and Gwinnett counties. The second safety project includes pavement marking upgrades on 14.450 miles of Interstate 75/SR 401 from south of SR 159 to north of Old Hatley Road in Crisp and Turner counties.
Additionally in December, Georgia DOT awarded its first Construction Management/General Contractor contract worth $6.5 million for preconstruction services on the U.S. 17/SR 404 Spur Bridge Major Maintenance Project over the Savannah River. The overall project includes replacing the existing cables, bridge bearings, and joints as part of planned maintenance, as well as raising the bridge profile for additional vertical clearance for larger ships navigating below.
The December awards bring the total construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2024 to $1.08 billion. Fiscal Year 2024 began July 1.
Bids for Design-Bid-Build projects were received on Dec. 15, and contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders on Dec. 29.
