ALBANY – Georgia-Pacific is celebrating its fifth anniversary of operations at its lumber mill in Albany. Festivities have featured appreciation dinners, commemorative T-shirts, and a proclamation from the Dougherty County Board of Commissioners highlighting the contributions the mill and its employees have made to Albany and the surrounding area.

Built in 2020, Albany Lumber employs approximately 150 people and produces a wide variety of lumber products, such as 2×4 and 2×6 lumber for construction. These products are sustainably sourced using local Southern yellow pine trees, known for their strength and versatility. Lumber manufactured at Albany Lumber is used in a wide variety of ways, including in the construction of commercial and residential buildings.

“It is very exciting to be celebrating our five-year anniversary here in Albany,” Plant Manager Michael Johnson said. “Since its conception, Albany Lumber was built with the intention of being one of the most cutting-edge mills in the country. Between our production of high-quality lumber products, our sustainable procurement processes, and our amazing employees, Albany Lumber continues to be a great place to work and a great partner to the Albany/Dougherty County area.”

Along with the internal celebrations at the mill, Georgia-Pacific employees received a proclamation from the Dougherty County Commission. The proclamation was presented to Johnson by Commissioner and Vice Chairman Anthony Jones, who represents the area where the mill is located.

“Georgia-Pacific serves as an outstanding community partner,” Jones said while delivering the proclamation, “embracing its role in supporting the region’s growth and social fabric through continued civic engagement and economic investment, while demonstrating its commitment to the well-being of the Dougherty County community, including providing invaluable assistance in response to the recent storm-related disasters.”

Georgia-Pacific, headquartered in Atlanta, operates 15 different facilities and employs more than 7,500 people statewide. The company has invested approximately $3 billion in capital improvements and acquisitions since 2013 and contributes $966 million in direct wages and benefits to the state, while also creating an additional 23,000 jobs outside of the company that supports its operations.
