BACONTON — The celebration was a bit subdued. But nonetheless, the near two-hour bus trip from Lumpkin seemed a little quicker after Baconton Charter School scored a 24-22 victory over Stewart County last football season.

Coach Johnny Hayes would like nothing more than for his young Blazers to experience that winning feeling more often.

As the 2015 season begins, Baconton is optimistic its hard work this offseason will pay off.

“We have a lot of new guys,” junior lineman Tristen Goodman said. “They are learning the playbook really fast and they’re looking good out here. They’ve been in the weight room every day. A lot of these guys haven’t missed a day. They’re dedicated to the team. That’s really what it’s about.”

As most Class A schools do, many starters play on both sides. Five defensive starters are back, while just two return on offense. But Hayes likes what he has seen.
