Twenty months after claiming his first PGA Tour victory in a three-man playoff, Jordan Spieth repeated the feat Sunday to claim the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Spieth, 21, sank a 28-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to outlast Sean O’Hair and Patrick Reed for the title. The winning putt came on the par-3 17th hole after all four players made par on the par-4 18th hole and the par-4 16th hole earlier in the playoff.
Beginning the final round in second place, Spieth shot a 2-under-par 69 Sunday on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort to finish at 10-under 274.
Reed closed with a 65, and O’Hair carded a 67.
Henrik Stenson shot 67 on Sunday and finished at 275, alone in fourth place. Third-round leader Ryan shot a final-round 72 and wound up in fifth place at 276.
Troy Merritt (final-round 66) took sixth place at 278. Luke Guthrie (68), Jason Kokrak (68) and Danny Lee (67) shared seventh place at 279. Seven players, including Vijay Signh, tied for 10th at 280.
All three of the playoff participants played bogey-free golf on the back nine to stay in contention.
After opening the round with consecutive birdies, Spieth gave both strokes back with consecutive pars on Nos. 5 and 6. He rebounded to make two more birdies in a row at Nos. 13 and 14 before closing with four pars.
O’Hair also was even par on the day at the turn, but he charged down the stretch with birdies at Nos. 11, 12, 14 and 16.
Reed began his round with a birdie, then parred the rest of the front nine. He birdied Nos. 10, 11 and 15, and he completed his round with a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 18.
