ALBANY — Westover High School was put on a brief security lockdown Wednesday morning while Albany police responded to a burglary call near the school, officials said.

“Albany Police Department contacted officials at Westover about a burglary in close proximity to the school,” Dougherty County School System spokesman J.D. Sumner said. “APD was afraid the suspects were armed and potentially dangerous, so the school went to a level one code red lockdown.”

APD officials reported Wednesday that investigators and uniformed officers responded to a residence on the 1500 block of Westwood Drive around 10:30 a.m. after a neighbor called 911 to report a burglary in progress.

Officers located some stolen property in bushes behind the residence. APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said Branden Miller, 22, and Ryan Adams, 24, were charged with first-degree burglary. One of the men was taken into custody near the location and the second was arrested later, she said.

“The lockdown only lasted about 10 minutes before APD called with the all-clear,” Sumner said. “We had very minimal interruption in classroom activity.”

Banks said investigators were looking to clear additional cases with the arrests.
