ACADEMIC
Assistant Academic Dean Karan Pittman has been appointed academic dean at Andrew College in Cuthbert and will begin her new role on June 1.
Andrew President Linda Buchanan announced in October faculty and trustee meetings that she had appointed Pittman to serve in the role. Rather than conducting a national search, she told the board she was appointing the best person for the job, a person who was already working for the college and proven to be an effective leader. She also said that the current interim academic dean, Dick McCallum, would work closely with Pittman for the remainder of the academic year as a mentor and would lend his expertise to ensure a seamless transition.
Pittman is currently pursuing her doctorate in leadership studies from the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky., and received her master of science degree in library science from the University of North Carolina. She received her bachelor of science degree in secondary social science education from Auburn University and her associate of arts degree in humanities from Andrew College.
She has served as assistant academic dean since Jan. 1. Previously, she served as Andrew College’s director of library services beginning in 1990 and taught numerous classes. She is also an author and historian.
