Thursday luncheon to focus on dementia

ALBANY — A luncheon is scheduled later in the week aimed toward making Albany a community that is dementia friendly.

The lunch is being hosted by the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, located at 225 W. Broad Ave., from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursday.

The lunch is being conducted by the Alzheimer’s Outreach Center. It is being catered toward businesses that want to learn how to be more dementia friendly, including how to tell if a particular customer may need extra help.

“Caregivers of dementia patients like to patronize those businesses and agencies that recognize that they may have a unique situation with their companion,” coordinators of the event said.

Lunch is provided, but reservations are requested. For reservations or more information, call (229) 432-2705.

Application period opens for Test Kitchens

ATLANTA —Schools in Georgia have until May 23 to apply for the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Georgia Grown Test Kitchen, which opened its third year of applications Monday. The department will select an elementary, middle and high school to participate in the 2016 program.

The new Test Kitchen schools will be given recipes featuring Georgia-grown commodities and information on how to source the listed products. The schools will provide feedback on nutritional analysis, student reaction and participate in other Georgia Grown activities throughout the year.

“Through programs such as the Georgia Grown Test Kitchen and Feed My School for a Week, we are influencing the buying habits of nutritional directors across the state,” Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black said. “We are showing the ease that comes with purchasing local products for school systems, while improving the nutritional value for students. We look forward to advancing the Georgia Grown Test Kitchen program to promote local and healthy eating in school systems throughout the state.”

Applicants can visit feedmyschool.org to apply.
